October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and this means I'm participating in a Bay Area double-fundraiser event:

Lately I spend a lot of time on YouTube listening to/watching clips of opera. Things get obsessive with me to the point where I listen to 10 performances in a row of an aria from, say, Mozart's Zauberflöte and compare the sound of the 10 different tenors or 10 sopranos (The Queen of the Night arias, in the latter case), and rate each singer in my mind as to how well they hit the high notes or pronounce the words.
I do this for a lot of different arias by other composers, too. I just compared 5 performances of "Una macchia è qui tuttora". Leontyne Price creates a vivid impression as Lady Macbeth. Other singers, several of whom I have never heard of, are even better vocal actresses than Leontyne Price.
A lot of the material I listen to is not even available through specialty music sellers. On YouTube you can also hear singers who have not performed much in the United States, or who made very few commercial recordings.
What on earth did we ever do in our spare time before YouTube came along?
I still hang out 90% of the time at LiveJournal, so it seemed like a good idea to create myownspecial LJ feed for those of you who have taken up residence at InsaneJournal.

In about a half hour, I am going to get in my car and drive off to work. During my commute, I will listen to Babyshambles/Down In Albion and in preparation for this, I have removed the outer cellophane wrapping from the CD cover.
To judge from the varied reactions I've heard about Babyshambles, this could either go very well or else be a total failure.

In slightly more fannish news: I have two episodes of Stargate Atlantis waiting for me. It's just a matter of finding time somewhere during the evenings to view them; I have this perverse habit of falling asleep by 11 o'clock, silly me!

(Actually, my 50 cents, which I am never going to see again.)
Okay, so I declare the Elvis special edition Reese's Peanut Butter Cups with banana creme to be a fail.
Yuck.

(WTF is up with that LiveJournal auto-post stuff?)
ETA: Oh.

So because of a lot of moving things from one room to another and just plain ol' re-organizing my stuff, I found my Leontyne Price recital CDs.
I've been letting myownspecial mom play them at full blast on the Macintosh. One is the famous "blue album", and as I listened to it, I remembered why Leontyne Price was such a hit. A truly glorious and thrilling voice.

Huh... whaddya know:
Paul Potts, the winner of Britain's Got Talent, already has an album out at Amazon.com.
Dear Powers That Be: Please make sure he doesn't ruin his voice by singing stuff that's too heavy for his voice. Kthxbai.

Sometimes I look in my inbox of a secondary e-mail account and find spam with subject headings that are so wonderfully odd that they could be user IDs.
"Oval effigy", for example. Or "Huttanuttaka Phone".
Spam e-mail:
"Myowncrazyself, Meet your new Wee Mee!"
"Whether you're a quirky chick who likes to show off her "personality" in the summer sun or a wacky über cool surfer dude who's ready to hit the beach, you want to be yourself wherever the summer breeze takes you. No worries, we've got you covered! Make a WeeMee that's a perfect fit for you and let your personality soar through the Internet. Don't forget to show your friends!"Um, yeah. Sure.

If I get my friend Francisco to go with me and pay for my ticket (and he will, because he owes me big time and he also doesn't care whether the critics like or hate the movie), should I go see FF: Rise of the Silver Surfer?
Hooray for fans who picspam!
Chris Evans caps -- relatively unspoilery for "Silver Surfer"
